Team Aretha remain on good form in 1972. Jerry Wexler on production with The Memphis Horns and The Sweet Inspirations and sisters Carolyn and Erma on background vocals. Aretha leads from the front with that great message: “To Be Young, Gifted And Black Is Where It’s At”. It’s to America’s great shame that, in institutional reality, black music continues to have to fight in the seemingly never ending struggle for equal rights that are in line with the legislative ideology. The album veers from the magnificently poignant to the more tiresome “showbiz” presentation. It’s a bit of a constant battle for my affections. She’s still winning, just about…
