TJR says

On his seventh long player, the big horns and strings enhanced production pays dividends, and the 31-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist seems to be in his element. He indulges his passion for the soulful and the funky within the pop rock template, turning his hand to (awful) pop balladry for added variety. The album was a #2 monster hit for him, five times platinum, and spawned four hit singles; “It’s Over” (#38), “Lowdown” (#3), “What Can I Say” (#42) and “Lido Shuffle” (#11), the latter three also finding their way into the UK Top 30. From every angle, this was his undoubtedly his commercial peak. I can appreciate that it's technically excellent but, the spunky “Lido Shuffle” aside, it's mostly bland session sludge to me. I note that the core players went on to form Toto. Need I say more?
