Following in a new American hardcore punk trend for little high-tempo records packing in 7 to 10 songs, Dead Kenndys released “In God We Trust, Inc.”, a 12” mini album of 8 songs clocking in at just under 14 minutes. Faster faster faster faster is the order of the day on Side 1, as the band rip through the set aided by new drummer D.H. Peligro (Darren Henley) who plays like a man possessed. Not that they’re stuck for something to say – organized religion gets it tight straight from the off with “Religious Vomit”, and “Kepone Factory” recalls the pesticide Kepone, and points out that governmental indifference (such as was shown by the Japanese) can vastly worsen the effects of catastrophes like the Minamata disease. The two best tracks are on the flip side - the band nailed their anti-fascist colours to the mast on the 63 second blast “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” and surely the dumb ass skins who’d misinterpreted “California Über Alles” got the message more clearly this time. “We’ve Got a Bigger Problem Now” was written as a news update on “California Über Alles”, acutely observing that Ronald Reagan was now the new Jerry Brown. It’s the only sign of the craftsmanship that was so apparent on last years album. The album closes with a cover of Frankie Laine’s “Rawhide”. Talk about undoing all your hard work…
