Formed in the spring of 1970 after Blind Faith had split, Eric Clapton teamed up with some of his new musician mates to form Derek & The Dominoes. The core four (augmented on this LP by guitarist Duane Allman) were: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitars), Bobby Whitlock (vocals, keyboards; acoustic guitar), Carl Radle (bass, percussion) and Jim Gordon (drums, percussion). Whitlock explained the ethos of the group: “we didn't want any horns, we didn't want no chicks, we wanted a rock 'n' roll band. But my vocal concept was that we approach singing like Sam and Dave did: [Clapton] sings a line, I sing a line, we sing together.” Cool manifesto, failed promises. The top cut, “Layla”, became a UK hit in 1972; the LP was even more of a slow burner, finally charting in 2011, 41 years after it was released!
