By the fall of 1970 independent producer Jerry Williams had moved from the Capricorn Studios team to Quin Ivy’s Quinvy Studios, famous for producing Percy Sledge’s seminal “When a Man Loves a Woman”. Reluctantly he brought along the equally reluctant Doris Duke with him – although they didn’t like each other they had worked brilliantly together on 1969’s “I’m A Loser” LP. This one considerably tones down the gritty southern soul aesthetics in favour of a smoother brand of Gladys Knight style adult orientated soul pop, expressive interpretations of “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” and all that jazz. Despite some nice string arrangements and a full band production, end results were not a patch on the debut – the songs weren’t as strong and the band didn’t grip anywhere near as much. Jerry even tries to exert his famous love for the country genre via “Bad Water”, the albums bum-dum low point. Doris herself disagrees mind you, in later interviews she stated that she thought this was the superior set. Nice try Doris…
