“Fats” by Fats Domino - album review

TJR says

Recorded in 1970 and produced by Dave Bartholomew. 2 reworkings onboard - “Wait Till It Happens To You” (Fats Is Back, 1968) and “When You’re Smiling” (Let’s Dance With Fats Domino, 1963). There’s a certain feel that he’s more at home with this team and the fact that the best two tracks are two of his own is a good sign. There are 8 originals in the set together with 3 covers – “It’s A Sin To Tell A Lie” (Elton Britt, 1936), “When You’re Smiling” (Seger Ellis, 1928) and “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” (Lloyd Price and His Orchestra, 1952). A lot of his music’s a bit safe-beat at this stage, but Fats remains entirely likeable… and I’m partial to the occasional vocal drawl (shades of Dylan?) which he’s developed in these years…
