The Jukebox Rebel

Following the departure of founding member, main lyricist and lead vocalist, Peter Gabriel, the remaining four, after some soul-searching, decided to continue working together. They placed an anonymous advert in The Melody Maker looking for “a singer for a Genesis-type-group”. Despite receiving some 400 replies, none were considered suitable, and drummer Phil Collins was democratically elected as the new drummer/lead singer! The new quartet were: Mike Rutherford (12-string guitar, bass, bass pedals), Tony Banks (pianos, synthesizers, organ, Mellotron, 12-string guitar, backing vocals), Phil Collins (drums, percussion, lead and backing vocals) and Steve Hackett (electric guitar, 12-string guitars). Their music is so nondescript and un-moving to me that I can barely comprehend how anyone can passionately rave about them as they do. This is by far their worst yet as far I'm concerned. However, fair play to the four for carrying on determinedly; the LP reached #3 in the UK and #31 in the US - they had never been higher in either territory.
