Creative and personal differences led to Human League founder members Ware and Marsh leaving Oakey et al with it, and they formed Heaven 17 in 1980, recruiting old pal Glenn Gregory, as they had originally tried to do with Human League a few years earlier. For their September, 1981, debut they line-up: Glenn Gregory (23, vocals), Martyn Ware (25, synthesisers; piano, percussion, backing vocals) and Ian Craig Marsh (24, synthesizers, saxophone, percussion). On side 1 (pavement side) there’s too much of an underlying R n B n Funk groove for me to jump on the “Album Of The Year” bandwagon but, having said that, even I can hear that this is an invigorating release of decent quality synth pop, whilst side 2 (penthouse side) has more of the electronica that I’m looking for. The 5 singles (too political for radio) struggled to make an impact on the charts - “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang” (#45), “I’m Your Money” (-), “Play To Win” (#46), “Penthouse And Pavement” (#57), “The Height Of The Fighting” (-) - although the work held better as an album in the eyes of the record-buying public, rising to #14 in the UK and staying on the charts for an impressive 77 weeks.
