The fourth Magazine album arrived in June, 1981, and followed all of the others into the UK Top 40, no mean achievement, although it wasn't enough to satisfy their hunger. They line-up: Howard Devoto (vocals, guitar), Barry Adamson (bass guitar), Dave Formula (keyboards), Ben Mandelson (guitar, violin) and John Doyle (drums). They're now firmly entrenched in the (sophisticated) pop new wave camp, although it's all a bit “b-side” to my ears; there's very little for me here. Behind the scenes, there was a fair bit of turmoil within the ranks. Since last year's “Correct Use Of Soap” they had lost key player John McGeoch to Siouxise & The Banshees, the guitarist being keen to explore more abrasive postpunk territories as well as seeing his efforts being better rewarded in a more commercially succesful group. Shockingly for everyone connected, group leader Howard Devoto quit ahead of the album's release, himself disillusioned with the lack of success and at losing McGeoch. Effectively, that signalled the end of the group in 1981, the others ploughing on with alternative music projects various.
