The second long-player from the 26-year-old blues-rocker outta Louisiana was tellingly recorded in both Nashville and Memphis - this guy does heritage! I find the set to be stronger than his debut from earlier in the year, although I'm none too convinced by the soul ballads which close side one - his much-celebrated and covered “Rainy Night In Georgia” and “For Le Ann” - both of which seem to lack that spark of magic, which might fulfill the potential of the songs themselves. There are three keepers onboard for me - the propulsive and breezy opener “Elements And Things”, a dark side of the moon fantasy in which Tony and his band come across like a funky Spencer Davis Group, the lustful and funky “I Want You” and “I Thought I Knew You Well” which proves that Tony Joe is well capable of delivering the soul ballad to my liking. Decent.
