“Indoda Mahlathini” by Various Artists - album review
features in: (B-list) Album Chart of 1969 ● (B-list) Album Chart of the 1960s |
With the Motella label quality mark and a front cover that promises brilliance, the acquisition of this LP would have been an easy buying decision to make for those South African music fans who were fortunate enough to be able to do so back in 1969. The content certainly doesn't disappoint, even if the presentation is somewhat misleading. In reality, the great Mahlathini is billed on only two numbers (“Imbodlomane” and “Gabi Gabi”) and his backing vocals boost another two (“Sengibuya Emarabini” by Mahotella Queens and “Akashaywa Umfazi” by Sweet Home Dames). See notes for Nick Lotay's extensive album overview.
